Our team created several experimental Minecraft Hunger Games arena prototypes. Two such prototypes are presented here for download as Minecraft map/save files, which can be played in Minecraft or opened in an editor program such as MCEdit.
Instructions
Minecraft single-player: Extract the top-level folder from the zip file to the /saves/ folder inside your Minecraft profile directory (e.g. %AppData%/.minecraft/ on Windows).
Minecraft multi-player: Extract the top-level folder from the zip file to the same location as your Minecraft server jar; update "level-name" in server.properties with the name of the folder you extracted.
Eden, by Brent Calvelage [Download]
| An earlier prototype by Brent Calvelage, Eden is a picturesque world of dense forest and peaceful ponds, with plenty of resources and lots of hiding places. Eden is the counterpart to Hell (no longer available), a hostile wasteland with few resources. Playtests with Eden and Hell originally sought to determine the effect of hostile versus tame arena environments on player behaviour. The version presented here is the same one used for our playtest with Concordia sociology students, described in the report. |

Icarus, by Brent Calvelage and Tom LeCercle [Download]
| Icarus was completed during the late stages of the project, after our final playtest. It consists of two parts: a forested outer ring, designed by Brent Calvelage and patterned after Eden, and an inner citadel by Tom LeCercle, comprising a series of stone walkways and staircases suspended over an abyss. Icarus is described in more detail in the project report. See also the readme file included in the zip. |
